A woman found dead on cold concrete awakens another story that has refused to fall silent inside a police officer. A child tries to escape the past while a detective searches for the owner of a voice absent from every record. Their paths converge through Istanbul, the stone courtyards of Mardin, underground cisterns and towers reaching into the sky.
Yüksel K. is a man trying to silence his past. Mavi is the detective who makes other people's pasts speak. One wants to forget; the other forgets no detail. Every death lifts the soil from an old secret, and every clue creates another question instead of an answer.
How much must one resemble a killer in order to understand him? Mavi does not merely ask the reader to hunt the murderer; it asks them to reconsider the line between culprit, victim and the lost. Sometimes the greatest secret in an investigation is the person conducting it.
